Cement stabilisation

MP & KM Golding Ltd have been stabilising roads since 1991 and are now classed as the market leader across Europe in their specialist field of stabilising rural roads and unbound surfaces, turning then into hard and durable surfaces suitable for cars, tractors and HGVs.

We have been developing this form of stabilisation for over ten years and are continually introducing ground breaking techniques to the industry, that competitors try to copy years later. With road stabilisation there is currently no industry standard, which we are proposing, unlike tarmac and concrete. So what one company offers will not be the same as another. Remember you get what you pay for - if you want a cheap job you can always find someone to reduce the cement content!

What is Road Stabilisation?

Road Stabilisation is the process of incorporating percentages of cement into in-situ or imported materials, thereby turning it into a bound surface. The basic process dates back thousands of years, but with it's cost savings and environmental advantages, it's acceptance and use in the UK and throughout the rest of the World has grown dramatically over recent years. The following describes the process involved in stabilising a particular surface.


The crushing stage takes out potholes, track grooves and loosens existing materials in preparation for the addition of the stabilising product. Any area can be stabilised as the crushing drum has a crushing depth of 0-300 mm and is capable of crushing hardcore, granite and tarmac. This is the preparation required before cement is added.


The existing unbound surface has cement powder applied to the surface which is then mixed into the crushed material several times with the crusher to ensure an even spread. We use large capacity towed spreaders to get the cement on quickly (not small front mounted spreaders) because as soon as the cement comes into contact with a small percentage of moisture it will start to cure and you then only have a couple of hours before it starts to die.


Levelling (grading)                                                                                

The area is then graded to help with drainage using one of our graders. We can put an all one way camber or an apex on the road to help shed the water. Our grader can be used to make small ditches and remove small grass lips on the side of the road which stop the natural water flow. We can also install new ditches and clean out old ones, as well as putting in culverts.

We have one of the most sophisticated graders on the market - it is based on a self-propelled motor grader.  The main advantage being that you are grading and driving in the same direction, so you are all ways in control of the blade. It is faster and more accurate, the advantage being the faster the road is graded the stronger your road will be (the cement will not have died).

The distance between the grader wheels and the tractor wheels is a lot longer giving you a flatter road (not so wavy)

Remember the grading is what you look at and drive over every time you use the road.

It's all in the grading!


Compacting (vibrating)

With the use of vibrating plates or a vibrating roller we compact the area which will then form a hard wearing surface with increased longevity due to the stabilisation methods used. It will set to provide a hard-bound surface capable of taking heavy traffic.

We have special tyres on our compaction tractor so you are not left with tyre prints in your road.


Why Should I Use Cement?

Cement is mixed with the crushed road surface. It is applied using a hopper which spreads the cement on the crushed area. The cement is then mixed in to the area with the crusher. Cement is suitable for agricultural areas and areas that take large amounts of heavy traffic.

Agrebind comes in a liquid form, it is diluted and then sprayed directly onto the road surface. It is an environmentally safe, non-hazardous and non-corrosive product. AgreBind is more suitable for areas that specifically require an environmentally friendly product, dust control, it will retain the original colour and is more suitable for domestic traffic.


Types Of Finishes

These new types of surfaces emit very little dust and don't gravel compared to older types of stabilised surfaces.

Brush finish more suited to areas witch have a large percentage of foot traffic a high grip surface


Pan Finish a good all round surface suitable for foot and vehicle traffic


Smooth finish more suitable for waste pads and silage pit or areas which need to have a high tare strength (hgv turning areas)


Reinforced stabilisation is best suited to areas that have a poor sub base, increasing the strength and locking it together


Waste Pads

A sealed surface that is dry laid and is ideal for roads, waste recycling facilities and storage areas. It provides a durable cost effective surface. The methods used mean that no expansion joints are required, as would be needed for wet laid concrete and recycled stone can be used in the process.

Stabilsed surfaces have a relatively quick construction time, allowing minimum downtime for the businesses concerned. It is of low permeability so can be used to control surface water.
